What is Orthodontics Surgical Treatment?

Orthodontics Surgical Treatment occurs when a problem exists that cannot be corrected through orthodontic procedures alone. The patient will have already begun treatment with braces before a diagnosis for surgical treatment is made. Surgical treatment must be done by an oral surgeon, and generally takes place in a hospital. We work with surgeons with the utmost expertise and will be directly involved from beginning to end of treatment.

When is Surgery Required?

The decision as to whether surgical treatment will be required will be made following full diagnostic imaging and orthodontic x-rays.

Some issues that may require orthodontic surgical treatment include:

     1. Abnormality in jaw bone
     2. Serious protruding or receding upper jaw
     3. Severe misalignments
     4. Front teeth protrude over bottom teeth, known as severe overjet

If orthodontic surgery is required, it is best to have it done once bone growth is complete. This means that females should be aged 14 – 16 and males 17 – 21.

The Surgical Procedure and Its Aftermath

Surgery will be done by an oral surgeon in the hospital using general anesthesia. In most cases, the surgery takes several hours. Your braces will be left on during the procedure. They help to stabilize the jaw bone and teeth. Because the primary purpose of orthodontic surgery is the realignment of the jaws and teeth so that they work together properly, bone will be removed, shifted or altered during the procedure. To secure the bones in the corrected position, tiny wires, bands or screws are used which eventually integrate with the bone.

Six weeks is typically needed for initial healing, but it may be as much as twelve. Once healing is complete, your orthodontic treatment by our team here in Still Water will continue. We want to be sure that the successful results of the surgery are maintained. In some cases, this requires some minor adjustments. This entire combined treatment will take from one to three years to be totally complete.

The final results will be amazing. Your facial symmetry will be more beautiful than ever and your lovely smile will dazzle everyone around you.
